1. Fall of Ground Competent Person “A” (Underground Coal)

 
Programme Overview

This course is a legal requirement for any person who inspects and declares a workplace safe for
himself/herself and a crew in an underground mining operation.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be able to read and write, with a minimum of 10 days of underground exposure.

A candidate must have:

  • Personal information document
  • Certified copy of ID
  • Copy of Medical Fitness Certificate
  • Underground clothing and PPE
  • ISDC Application for training
Training Approach and Periods

Learners will be required to attend classes on-site for 5 days and complete on-the-job training if required.

Learners who  don’t have sufficient relevant mining experience will be required to complete an on-the-job
logbook on an operational mine. Completing the logbook will take approximately 1–2 weeks.

On successful completion of the practical assessment, the learner’s final registration and
certification will be done by the MQA.

3. Blasting Assistant (Underground Coal)

 

Programme Overview

This course is a legal requirement for any person who works with or forms part of the use of
explosives in an underground mining operation.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be able to read and write, with a minimum of 10 days of underground exposure.

A candidate must be in possession of:

  • Personal information document
  • Certified copy of ID
  • Copy of Medical Fitness Certificate
  • Underground clothing and PPE
  • ISDC Application for training
Training Approach and Periods

Minimum Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • NSC: Higher Certificate (HC) pass with at least 30% in English
  • NC(V): HC pass with 40%
  • Senior Certificate (SC) : Minimum 33.3% – Endorsement not required
  • SC (Amended): HC pass with a minimum of 30%

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS:

  • NSC: Higher Certificate (HC) pass with at least 30% in
  • A SAQA Evaluation Certificate confirming NSC Level 4 equivalence
  • Minimum 30% or equivalent in English
  • Senate Discretionary Admissions
  • Mature Age Category 5 (23 years and older):
  • Must be 23 years or older during the first year of registration
  • Must have attempted a Senior Certificate or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years’ work experience
  • Demonstrated ability and adequate communication skills relevant to the programme
  • Mature Age Category 6 (45 years and older):
  • Must be 45 years or older during the first year of registration
  • No formal school-leaving qualification required
