Overview

1. Competent Person A – Surface Excavations (MQA/SP/0175/18 (B))

This course is a legal requirement for any person who inspects and declares a workplace safe
on an opencast mining operation.

This course is open to employers and the private sector.

Entry Requirements:

  • Learners must be able to read and write
  • Required items of PPE
  • Valid certificate of medical fitness
  • Certified copy of ID
  • Certified copy of qualification
  • Proof of payment

Training Approach and Periods:

  • Learners will be required to attend classes on-site for 8 days
  • On-the-job training may be required
  • Learners without sufficient relevant mining experience must complete an on-the-job logbook on an operational mine
  • Completion of the logbook takes approximately 1–2 weeks
  • On successful completion of the practical assessment, final registration and certification will be done by the MQA
  • Candidates will be registered on the MQA system by ISDC

2. Blasting Assistant – Surface Excavations (SP-CLA-G017)

This course is a legal requirement for any person who works with or is part of the use of explosives on an opencast mining operation.

This course is open to employers and the private sector.

  • Learners must be able to read and write
  • Required items of PPE
  • Valid certificate of medical fitness
  • Certified copy of ID
  • Certified copy of qualification
  • Proof of payment
