The Installation Rules P1 programme prepares learners to meet the theoretical requirements for certification as an Installation Electrician, commonly known as a Wireman’s Licence.

This programme focuses on developing in-depth knowledge of SANS 10142 – The Wiring of Premises, which forms the legal and technical foundation of electrical installation work.
The course is essential for individuals seeking government certification and registration as Installation Technicians under the Department of Employment and Labour.

Entry Requirements
Learners must meet one of the following eligibility pathways:
Option 1
- Minimum integrated practical and theoretical experience registered with EWSETA
- Pass Installation Rules P1 & P2 with a minimum of 50% each
Option 2
- Passed Electrical Trade Test
- N3 Certificate in:
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science (or Industrial Electronics)
- Electrotechnology (or Electrical Trade Theory)
- Pass Installation Rules P1 & P2 with a minimum of 50% each
Option 3
- Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering
- Pass Installation Rules P1 & P2 with a minimum of 50% each
- Assessment Approach
Installation Rules Examinations - Two written examinations: P1 and P2
- Both papers are compulsory
- Minimum pass mark: 50% per paper
Exams are administered by the Department of Higher Education and Training
Examination Dates & Duration
Installation Rules examinations are written three times per year:
- March / April
- July / August
- November
Learners may prepare via classroom-based or online study options.
Certification
Learners who successfully pass both Installation Rules P1 & P2 will:
- Fulfil the theoretical requirement for a Wireman’s Licence
- Be eligible to proceed with certification as an Installation Technician
- Meet one of the key statutory requirements set by the Department of Employment and Labour
Duration
Duration 1 Trimester (3 Months) Per N-Level (4 Subjects)

Upon completion and fulfilment of all regulatory requirements, learners may register and work as:
